Day-Night Shift

The wood ant keeps watch rooted to the spot, looking into
nothing. And nothing is heard but the dripping
from dark leaves and the night’s murmur deep
in summer’s canyon.

The spruce tree stands like a clock-hand,
spiked. The ant glows in the mountain’s shadow.
A bird shrieks! And at last. Slowly the cloud belt

begins to roll.
